Julia Transgender Documentary

Julia Grant, a transgender activist, was born as George Roberts on 21 September 1954. She died on 2 January 2019. Julia Grant is the first person whose transition story was turned into a documentary and run into main media stream in UK. The name of the documentary was George and Julia (1979), directed by David Pearson for the BBC, a five hour long documentary.

The documentary of Julia Grant was later named as A Change of Sex (1979).

Julia Grant died on 2 January 2019, Wednesday, at the age of 64. Julia Grant’s transition was the first to be explored on TV back in 1979. Julia Grant also helped set up Benidorm Pride in Spain and counsel trans people in the USA.

A Change of Sex

A Change of Sex is a multi-part television documentary about English trans woman Julia Grant. A Change of Sex is one of the first documentary on transgender issues. The first chapter of the documentary was titled George. In the year 1980, BBC2 repeated the documentary programme, adding two more new chapters – Julia: The First Year and Julia: My Body, My Choice.

Again, in the year 1994, the documentary A Change in Sex was aired with an additional new chapter The Untold Story. The new chapter was added so that the viewers could know what happened in the life of Julia Grant on the past 15 years.

In 1999, one final chapter was added named Julia Gets Her Man.

Julia Grant suffered from Colorectal cancer (CRC), also known as bowel cancer, colon cancer, or rectal cancer but she survived it. But Julia suffered multiple health problems and died following short illness at 64.
