Dolores Fonzi as Julie

Dolores Fonzi plays Julie, Ema’s troubled niece. Julie can also communicate with the dead, but her connection is more intense, physical and disruptive. Her arrival turns what looks like a difficult family reunion into the trigger for a much larger supernatural event.

Julie is not simply a younger copy of Ema. The contrast between them shows two responses to the same unwanted sensitivity: Ema suppresses it and withdraws, while Julie cannot keep the boundary between desire, death and daily life intact. Fonzi is known for Paulina, Truman and her directing debut Blondi.

Alejandra Flechner

Alejandra Flechner is one of the four performers highlighted in Netflix’s festival announcement. Her character name has not yet been disclosed. Flechner appeared in the Oscar-nominated historical drama Argentina, 1985 and has a long career across Argentine film, television and theater.

Carolina Sánchez Álvarez

Carolina Sánchez Álvarez receives a formal introduction in the announced cast. Netflix’s English title page shortens her name to Carolina Álvarez, while the production announcement uses Carolina Sánchez Álvarez. Her role is being kept secret ahead of release.

Who else is in the cast?

Carlos Portaluppi, Germán de Silva and Chilean actor Luz Jiménez round out the officially announced ensemble. Netflix has not connected them to named characters yet. The series combines Ema’s family story with the residents of a neighborhood affected by the spreading dead, so the supporting cast may include relatives, neighbors and people connected to the murdered teenagers.

What is My Sad Dead about?

Ema has built a quiet life around not responding to the dead. The arrival of Julie forces her to confront another person with the same gift, while the murder of three teenagers in the violence-marked neighborhood of Piedrabuena disturbs the balance between the living and the dead.

The phenomenon becomes contagious. Voices from beyond begin reaching other residents, and people are forced to hear their own ghosts. The supernatural premise therefore works as more than a series of scares. It makes private grief, buried violence and unresolved guilt impossible for the community to ignore.

Which Mariana Enriquez stories inspired the series?

The main source is Mariana Enriquez’s short story My Sad Dead. The adaptation also incorporates passages and characters from Julie, A Sunny Place for Shady People and Back When We Talked to the Dead. This makes the miniseries a combination of related material rather than a direct expansion of only one story.

Enriquez co-wrote the adaptation with Guillermo Calderón, Anastasia Ayazi and Pablo Larraín. Her horror often places supernatural events inside ordinary homes and neighborhoods, where social violence can be more frightening than the ghosts. That approach is central to Netflix’s description of the show.

Who directed My Sad Dead?

Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín directed all four episodes. His films include Jackie, Spencer, El Conde and Maria. Fabula, the production company founded by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín, produced the series.

Exterior filming took place in Buenos Aires, while interiors were filmed in Santiago, Chile. Before its Netflix release, the complete series is scheduled to screen in feature-length form in the Official Selection at the 2026 San Sebastián International Film Festival.
