Directors Julia Willoughby Nason and Michael Gasparro previously worked on Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal and American Murder: Gabby Petito. Here, they organize the story around Mica’s own words and archival material rather than treating her only as the subject of a mystery.

The series also examines coercive control, a pattern of behavior that can isolate a person, restrict independence and make everyday life subject to another person’s monitoring or manipulation. The filmmakers connect that concept to the legal reform Mica’s family supports in South Carolina.

Who Was Mica Miller?

Mica Acacia Francis Miller was one of six siblings and was remembered by her family for her musical talent, faith and confidence. Originally from Wichita, Kansas, she moved with her family to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where they attended Solid Rock Church.

Mica became deeply involved with the church and served as a worship leader while still young. According to the documentary, she met John-Paul Miller when she was 13 and later worked as his assistant. He was the pastor of Solid Rock Church and 15 years older than Mica.

Mica married JP in 2017. The series traces how the relationship began while both were previously married and how, according to accounts from Mica’s family, friends and former church members, the marriage became increasingly controlling.

Who Is John-Paul “JP” Miller?

John-Paul Miller was the pastor of Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach and was known for an unconventional preaching style. He officiated Mica’s first wedding before later beginning a relationship with her, according to the documentary’s account.

The series presents statements from Mica’s relatives and friends alleging a long pattern of emotional, spiritual, financial and other abuse. It also uses church recordings, messages, police reports and other records to show how Mica repeatedly sought help. JP Miller declined to comment for the Netflix series.

Any discussion of the criminal case must remain separate from the death investigation. Authorities closed the North Carolina investigation after ruling Mica’s death a suicide. JP has not been charged with causing her death.

What Happened to Mica Miller?

Mica was found dead at Lumber River State Park on April 27, 2024. She had served JP with divorce papers two days earlier. On May 7, 2024, authorities announced that her death had been ruled a suicide and closed the investigation.

The official finding did not end public interest. Attention focused on reports Mica had made before her death, including statements to police that she feared for her safety, allegations involving tracking devices and repeated communications, and the broader pattern described by those close to her.

The documentary does not announce a new official cause of death. Its central question is how Mica reached that point and whether social, religious and legal systems adequately responded when she tried to get help.

What Is Coercive Control?

Coercive control describes a sustained pattern intended to dominate another person’s life rather than one isolated argument or incident. It can include isolation from friends and family, monitoring communications and movements, controlling finances, humiliation, threats and interference with access to basic needs or services.

South Carolina Senate Bill 702 defines coercive control as behavior that interferes with free will and personal liberty and is designed to make a person dependent. The proposed text includes examples involving isolation, monitoring, financial control, degrading treatment and threats to publish private information.

The bill is useful context for understanding the reform campaign, but it was not law during Mica’s marriage and had not become law at the time of the documentary’s release.

What Federal Charges Does JP Miller Face?

On December 18, 2025, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina announced a two-count federal indictment charging John Paul Miller with cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators.

The indictment alleges that beginning in November 2022, Miller sent unwanted and harassing communications to his estranged wife, posted an intimate image without her consent, caused tracking devices to be placed on her vehicle, interfered with her finances and daily activities, and damaged her tires. Prosecutors also allege he made false statements when questioned by investigators.

JP Miller pleaded not guilty. According to Netflix’s August 26, 2026 case update, his trial had been moved to the October 2026 term and he remained free on bond. These are pending allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Has JP Miller Been Charged in Mica’s Death?

No. JP Miller has not been charged in connection with Mica Miller’s death. His federal indictment concerns alleged cyberstalking before her death and alleged false statements to investigators. The distinction is explicit in both the Department of Justice announcement and Netflix’s case update.

Where Is JP Miller Now?

As of Netflix’s August 26, 2026 update, JP Miller was free on bond awaiting his federal trial. Netflix reports that he married Suzie Skinner in June 2025. The Solid Rock Church building and grounds were sold, although people interviewed for the documentary said he continued preaching to a small congregation in temporary Myrtle Beach locations.

A scheduled trial term is not the same as a completed trial, and the case remained pending as of the documentary’s August 2026 release.

What Is Mica’s Law?

“Mica’s Law” is the informal name used by Mica’s family and supporters for efforts to recognize coercive control within South Carolina’s domestic-violence laws. The documentary focuses on Senate Bill 702, sponsored by state senators Stephen Goldfinch and Larry Grooms.

The proposed legislation would add coercive control to state definitions and prohibited acts, expand protections to people in current or former dating relationships, and allow stalking, harassment and domestic violence to be considered in several family-law contexts.

The South Carolina Legislature’s official page shows that S. 702 was introduced on January 13, 2026 and referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. As of the latest information available with the documentary’s release, it had not passed into law.

The series centers Mica’s siblings and sister-in-law, along with friends and former members of Solid Rock Church. It also includes people who tried to help Mica, such as a biblical counselor and Regina Ward, the attorney she retained for her divorce.

Investigative journalist Rich McHugh discusses his reporting on the case. JP Miller did not participate in the documentary, so the series uses his recorded sermons, messages and past interview material where relevant.

How Does the Documentary Use Mica’s Voice?

The filmmakers had access to years of video, journals and other archival material supplied with the family’s permission. Netflix says voice-recreation technology was used to present passages from Mica’s journals in an approximation of her intonation.

That choice may matter to viewers deciding whether to watch. The words come from Mica’s writing, but the audio presentation is technologically recreated rather than an original recording of her reading every passage.
