When the turkey has been consumed, the leftovers have been dispersed, and you’re wondering what to do with the rest of your day, the answer is frequently a movie or TV show. While there are always some good films to see in theatres, you might find that you don’t want to leave the house.
If that’s the case, Hulu has some terrific recent releases for you to check out. These are titles that had limited theatrical releases or were never released at all, but are unquestionably the perfect way to end your Thanksgiving.
Theatre Camp
Theatre Camp, a mockumentary about a theatre camp in crisis, is a wonderful combination of cynically humorous and almost surprisingly touching. Theatre Camp, starring Molly Ball, Ben Platt, Ayo Edebiri from The Bear, and Jimmy Tatro, is about the highly dramatic manner that theatre kids and theatre grownups behave, especially when they’re around one another. More significantly, Theatre Camp emphasises the need of creating a space for these youngsters to connect, be dramatic and loud, and sing their hearts out together.
Rye Lane
Rye Lane is a neatly directed, short rom-com from a first-time director about a man dealing with a recent split who meets a woman who may be a new connection. Rye Lane is set in modern London and has two highly gripping performances from its characters, David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah. Naturally, tension arises between them, but Rye Lane is astute about the genuine challenges its two characters face, both with one another and in general, and Rye Lane manages to feel like it’s about two real people. It’s the kind of film we don’t see enough of these days, which is part of what makes it so endearing.
Little Women
Little Women officially takes place at various seasons of the year, but few films have a more autumnal, Thanksgiving-type vibe. The 2019 adaption of this seminal classic follows the four March sisters as they mature into young adults.
However, by bouncing around in time, director Greta Gerwig establishes some astounding connections that are only hinted at in most previous adaptations. Gerwig’s adaption may be the greatest one out there, thanks to a stellar ensemble cast that includes Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, and Timothée Chalamet, and it will leave you feeling sincerely grateful for the family you have.
